Farhad Manjoo has a bit of very well reasoned advice for Microsoft today in his column on Slate: forget about Yahoo!, and buy Palm instead. That advice makes a lot of sense. Though Microsoft generally denies any current interest in pursuing a purchase of Yahoo!, rumors of some sort of whole or partial takeover seem to crop up every couple of months. But Microsoft is a software company, not an advertising company, so purchasing Yahoo! doesn’t make much sense. |

Making regular backups of the data on your computer is a smart thing to do, though it can be tedious. Burning CDs or DVDs, or moving files to an external hard drive once a week (or however often you plan to back up your data) is a time consuming process. That’s why many people seek automated backup solutions, whether local or online. |

I’m very fortunate to live close to a pair of great weekly farmer’s markets, but in many parts of the country, getting locally produced, farm fresh foods is a difficult — or at least expensive and time consuming endeavor. The New York Times today profiled a new site called Foodzie that aims to bring the farmer’s market into the 21st century by creating an Etsy-style web marketplace for small artisan food producers and growers. |

A few days ago we ran a post that described how to find breaking news on Twitter. Our suggestion was to watch for trending terms on sites like Twopular and the Twitter search page, and then compare them against search and news trends using Google Trends to find articles about trending topics. |

I tested a private beta today called thisMoment, and it was fascinating. The service is focused on the idea of “You over Time,” with both personal and collective aspects that allow users to create a digital reflection of their lives. Through photos, video, blogging, other media and social elements, thisMoment effectively creates a user experience unlike any I know of (the closest that comes to mind is Jeremy Keith’s Adactio Elsewhere). |
